CHRISTMAS FLOAT

Unfortunately due to a local Hawkinge group not being able to raise enough collectors, the Tuesday night float was cancelled.

Our members tried to get enough collectors together through family and friends but due to illness this was not able to happen.

We appreciate that this is disappointing for all concerned but last year we put out a lot of publicity for new members to keep the float going, which although 2 new members joined this is still not enough.

A small number of people put a lot of effort into the float each year but this will not be able to continue without new members. It is also quite sad that the only email responses we receive are complaints. We are all volunteers giving our time, so if you enjoy the float that much then help us to keep it going.

Please click the Christmas Float tab on the Left to see the villages and dates and for the Hawkinge collections the road areas for each of the 4 nights

Please be aware that we try and cover all the roads within the areas noted but we are limited to a time factor we start at 5.30pm weekdays and 4.30pm weekends and finish no later than 8.00pm as most children are in bed and we have complaints about waking them up if any later than this.

We apologies in advance if your road is not visited.

Hawkinge Fun Day 2012

January 2011

We have had a very busy winter

The Christmas Float

Again a huge success and fun was had by all, despite the weather doing its best to stop even Father Christmas in his tracks. Unfortunately we did have to cancel a few evenings but we hope you all understand and fingers crossed for next year.

This year we were really pleased that so many of our supporters gave up their time to come and help. These "non-member" supporters make such a difference to us and on  a couple of the nights it was entirely down to them that we were able to go ahead.

We really need some new members, especially younger ones, and hopefully today we made a few more people aware of what we do and maybe inspired a few to give up a few hours to join us.

July 2011

Kennington Scouts

Elham Valley & Wye Lions Club gave Kennington Scout Group a donation of 500 towards their new Scout Hut.

Donations were recieved from local organisations and businesses and the building is now up!

Brenchley Hall which had been the Group's Headquarters since 1959 was demolished to make way for the Kennington Scouts Community Hall - See Community Hall Appeal website http://www.kenningtonscoutscommunityhallappeal.co.uk for more details about the project.

Changeover

July is start of a new Lions Year and on Sunday 10th July we all got together for a barbeque to celebrate the end of Lion President John Brook's Year and the start of a new year for our new President Neil Hope.
A great afternoon of food, drink and socialising was had by all.

Many thanks to Neil and Maureen Seymour for hosting the afternoon and preparing and cooking all the food (assisted in the BBQ area of course by Keith!)

Past President John Brook and his lovely wife Angie

John Brook hands over the chain of office to new President Neil Hope.

September

A very busy month for the club, with one weekend in particular seeing us involved in events on three consecutive days!

Golf Day

A really good turn out of 42 golfers took part in team and individual events and the weather was kind to us. A very enjoyable round of golf was had by all. Many of our golfers have participated in this event for many years and it is lovely to meet up with these "old friends" every year.

In the evening we had a lovely meal cooked by the excellent team at Sene Valley Golf Club and in total 56 sat down to the dinner accompanied by chat and banter about the days rounds.

The Team prize was won by Tim Moore and Martin Griffin with a creditable 45 points, narrowly beating Martin Davidson and Richard Botwright who had 44 points. The Individual prize went to Bob Musson with 38 points, although a brilliant 36 points secured second place for Val Makin.

Our Charter Member Colin celebrated his birthday on the same day and so a birthday cake was brought out for after the meal.

We raised around 700 for our Charities and this is a very good result in these difficult times, especially bearing in mind that our aim was to have a fun day.

Without the support of Sene Valley Golf Club, both in the office and the kitchen, we would not have been able to achieve such success and so in  addition to thanking all who took part, playing and sponsoring holes, a big thank you goes to all the staff at the club.

Hawkinge Fun Day

This annual event is run by the Hawkinge Events Team and sees the village join together for a fun day out for all the family. There are lots of stalls and entertainment and, as we did last year, we again held a cake stall.

All of the cakes were baked by one of our members wives, Olive Taylor, and we are extremely grateful to her for giving up so much of her time for this.

There were plenty of people to come and admire and buy the cakes and so we raised a few hundred pounds for our charites again.

Next year we hope to do something different so watch this space!

Postling Cross Country Ride

The day after the Hawkinge Fun Day sees several of our members and their families up bright and early to run the refreshments stall at Postling Ride.

This event is run every year and involves dozens of local riders riding across country with optional jumps. Always a great day, this year was no different. Lots of brave horses and riders of varying ages and abilities jumping (and sometimes not jumping) some lovely natural fences

Before they set of and when they get back they can come to us for a burger or bacon roll and tea and coffee. Whilst their family wait nervously for their return they can also at least have something to eat (although I think many of them needed something a bit stronger!)

This event takes lots of organising to make sure we have the right amount of food and that we can keep up a constant supply of food and drink so many many thanks to our members for helping to make this day possible.

We raised a fantastic 700 and we will be back next year!

Quiz night 23rd October at Brabourne Village Hall

Raising some funds for a very worthwhile school in Ethiopia.

One of our members, Roger Osborne, is going out there soon to take a look for himself at the work they are doing, so click on the Ethiopian Trip tab for more information

2010

The start of a new Lions Year with a new President, John Brook and a new Welfare Chairman, Roger Osborne.

Lots to organise but there are a few dates in the calendar for you to look at. In particular we have a quiz night in aid of a school in Ethiopia that we are helping. It promises to be a good night and it is in an excellent cause.

We are still collecting at both the Eurotunnel and Folkestone Racecourse on a regular basis - look out for us there

Also in the planning stages is this years Christmas Float and as always we would welcome any help on any of the nights. Contact us if you fancy a walk around the villages accompanied by Father Christmas and festive music to raise funds for a day out for the elderly in our area.

We are once again doing the catering at the Postling Cross Country Ride so if you see us there come and say hello.
